My current raku work is heavily influenced by architecture and landscape. Raku is an ancient Japanese ceramic firing method which has evolved through time and experience. It utilizes extreme temperature change to cause the distinctive and unique crazing on the surface of each piece. I employ three raku methods; Glazed, ‘Naked’ (i.e. the surface falls away as the vessel cools to reveal the natural clay body beneath) and Horsehair. My raku kilns are gas fired, reaching up to 950oC when work is removed with tongs and placed in reduction bins. After a time in reduction, they are removed to cool at ambient temperature. All work cleaned, dried and sealed with a specialist microcrystalline wax.
