My first one-person show in the 1970s was called 'Continuity through Diversity'. Whenever I thought I was repeating myself I invented a new style, so as to keep challenging myself to keep the work fresh. After rediscovering some early work I have been surprised at my own consistency.
From an early age I was fascinated by the way the Old Masters had told stories and put symbolic meaning into objects in their painting. Later on at art college in the 60s I became enthralled by all the exciting innovations of Modernism and Abstract art and at the fact that paintings could include ideas as well as moods and atmospheres. Elements from both have had an impact on my work.
Painting for me is a process, not something to be dashed off but requiring periods of analysis and contemplation.
For me it is the most wonderful way to explore our humanity.
