St Michael’s Church

Lucinda Etchell is a ceramicist, focussing on wheel thrown stoneware. “I aim to produce unique pieces that are stylish but practical for everyday use. Most of my work is wheel thrown, there is such satisfaction in creating an immediate form, but I also like to hand build. I started making ceramics a few years ago, gradually getting a feel for the clay and how it responds to handling on the wheel. As a lover of ‘useful’ things, there was always an aim to create something I specifically needed or that I thought would be beneficial, for example an attractive berry bowl for washing that handful of breakfast blueberries, or soap dishes to replace plastic dispensers. I love a blend of white dolomite glaze contrasting with a deeper, more intense colour, or using small amounts of cobalt or copper oxide for a simple yet striking aesthetic. My latest work has a strong Scandinavian style, blending a grey speckle and a white clay for a marbled effect.”
