I am originally from Scotland where I gained a degree in Printed Textile Design and Batik from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art , Dundee. My designs are influenced by the vibrant colours, amazing patterns and textures I see all around me, whether in nature or in more diverse places such as Spanish/ Moroccan tiles or from more recent travels throughout Vietnam and Australia.
From my detailed pencil drawings I create designs and patterns. I use the traditional technique of batik which involves applying layers of wax resist and overdyeing but in a modern way to produce fresh, original designs. I love the contrast between the fine detail obtained by the canting and the more abstract brushstrokes and crackle effects achieved with the wax. The wonderful part is watching the design evolve, then revealed when the wax is removed. Each piece is therefore truly unique.
My handcrafted silk batiks are produced as framed pictures, silk scarves, also as digitally printed cushions and coasters.
