Artist Statement
My world is never silent, so I paint to create a space in which to be quiet and find stillness. I invite others to enter this world through my paintings. To find inner calm and strength from the landscape, to build resilience and to find a place to think.
About My Work
I am mainly a painter of landscapes not strictly representational but moving towards abstraction and I am a colourist, using colour to explore the relationship between myself and the ’empty spaces’ seen in the landscape that I have built a connection with over time.
I explore similarity and these ever-changing views as a way to observe how I have stayed the same and yet changed, and how the landscape holds me and lifts me.
Alongside painting I draw and have done so since childhood. If I didn’t draw the world would soon overwhelm me. Drawing keeps me grounded along with helping me to process and understand my thoughts and the difficult times experienced especially with anxiety, grief, loss, hearing loss and tinnitus.
The drawing process for me is connected to thinking things through, expressing these thoughts like words, on paper. Whereas my painting process focuses on emotions and expressing these through colour.
In my practice I often incorporate lines, or bands of colour, often horizontal or parallel which can be seen on the horizon. This brings a sense of calm through rhythm, repetition, and pattern.
Because my world is never quiet,
the aim with my work is to find quietude a sense of inner calm, peacefulness and stillness.
If I take out my hearing aids I hear tinnitus and with them in I need to manage the noise levels which can be overwhelming. Finding stillness has become a replacement for silence.
Finding stillness within me has developed from my long practice of meditation and mindfulness. This developed further into exploring stillness within a moving landscape – rivers, seas, skies – then the landscape itself which constantly changes and moves throughout the seasons and through its process of living, dying, changing.
I paint mainly using Golden acrylics on cradled panels and also on canvas boards. I draw using a variety of materials on paper.
When I am not in my studio I will be outside creating a wildlife garden mainly for the bees but also for birds, butterflies and other insects.
