Biography
I am based in Bisham near Marlow on the Buckinghamshire/Berkshire border not far from the River Thames.
I am mainly a painter of landscapes not directly representational but moving towards abstraction and I am a colourist, using colour to explore the relationship between myself and the empty spaces seen within landscapes that I have built a connection with over time, such as fields, rivers, seas, and also the sky. I explore similarity and ever-changing views as a way to observe how we also stay the same and yet evolve.
I have an interest in exploring presence and absence and also the Japanese concept of ‘Ma’ the ‘light getting in through a doorway’, the empty space, or pause, embracing emptiness and silence in which to foster creativity and prevent mental tiredness and exhaustion, enabling us to appreciate the beauty around us. In the stillness we can connect to who we are, to our soul, leading to personal growth.
The horizon is calming and brings peace and inner stillness. These remind me that we too are not fixed, not solid, but are forever changing, moving forward, like a wave, a series of moments.
I am searching for stillness within movement. I am drawn to the constant changes I see but also the familiar presence. I am excited about colour and the ways colours merge and play and the way music I listen to intertwines with the rhythm and marks that I make. I seek out abstract shapes that can be seen in Nature.
I explore finding quietude which has developed from my long practice of meditation and mindfulness. This developed further into exploring stillness within a moving landscape – rivers, seas, skies – then the landscape itself which constantly changes and moves throughout the seasons and through its process of living, dying, changing.
