Potters, John Nuttgens and Vanessa Relf at the Walled Garden Pottery.
John and Vanessa have a very successful creative collaboration in their jointly conceived ceramics. Coming from very different backgrounds – John in his early years had something of a “backwoods” sensibility as a wood-firer, playing with earth and fire, a digger of clay, a hewer of wood, more latterly exploring the finer aesthetics of terra sigillata and delicate smoke fired pieces.
Vanessa’s background in illustration influences her playful designs, often drawing inspiration from nature, her slipped terracotta pieces with their asymmetric bumps and curves invite you to touch, and her colourful whimsical designs never take themselves too seriously!
John and Vanessa come together in their collaborative works with a shared love of asymmetry, the happy accident and their love of natural form.
