Biography

I studied at Kingston Polytechnic for  my Foundation course then went to Central Saint Martins for a hons degree in Theatre Design and then did a Masters in Fine Art and philosophy at The Slade School Fine Art at University College London. I started my career as a theatre designer then became an art teacher having done a PGCE in Secondary Art at The Roehampton Institute . Having moved to Buckinghamshire where I am from from London I worked for RTB for 8 years helping with get-ins for the Twickenham rugby, Boat show, Wimbledon, things at the NEC and Christmas trees in London hotels, making fake presents by papering boxes ! I got to do some flower arranging which I enjoyed, also topiary pruning, using my design skills. I worked at the Winslow Centre in Winslow as a cleaner for 7 years , but kept painting in my spare time, and still clean the Conservative office on a Saturday morning, which I have done for 8 years. I spent 7 years working for the NHS, doing art therapy as a Peer Tutor, which was fun and very rewarding seeing people come out of their shells and be creative. I now have my own business selling cards, pottery and paintings. I exhibit regularly and had 2 very successful exhibitions in Wendover at The Little Bird Told Me Gallery which both nearly sold out. Before this I also exhibited at The Queen’s Park Centre, which I sold lots at , too. I am an active member of Winslow and district art society. I have been doing  Bucks Art Weeks since the 90’s when I was a student, thirty years ago. I have exhibited in London in various locations. I was commended for an entry to The Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, but it didn’t get accepted sadly, although it was very large ! For the last 3 years I have made pottery at the Queens Park Centre, which is a great place, I have been going there for years.  My pots sell surprisingly well as do my cards, which are made from my favourite paintings. Sometimes I sell a painting ! I try to keep them affordable to everyone.

A professional ceramist came to a show I had in Swanbourne church a few years ago and said ” Katy your pots have a rustic charm and you are an aspiring potter” which I was quite pleased about.

I have always painted from a child and love the use of colour in my work. My friend John Tydeman says “they have a vitality and an innocence which is quite beguiling” which I thought was nice.
