Biography
I am a ceramicist who creates both functional and decorative ware, using clay as a way to explore form, pattern, and surface. My functional domestic pieces are often wheel-thrown, then coated in coloured slips before I carve abstract, freehand designs through the surface. These sgraffito patterns bring movement and spontaneity to the work and stand in deliberate contrast to the structured precision of my geometric tile designs.
My tiles, made from porcelain paper clay, are inspired by the intricate patterns of sacred geometry and reflect my love of colour, rhythm, and symmetry. Much of my inspiration comes from travels in Andalusia and Morocco, where geometric design has flourished for centuries. I am fascinated by the way pattern and structure are used in mosques and cathedrals to elevate the experience of worship — creating spaces that are both contemplative and uplifting. This sense of sacred order continues to guide my own approach to design.
I also raku fire some pieces, a firing technique which is a complete contrast to the more predictable firing in my electric kiln.
