On this half-day class you will use clay to take impressions from which you will then cast Plaster of Paris to create stylish art tiles!
You may like to come with some basic design ideas, or we can help you on the day.
One-day Plaster Cast Relief class for up to 4 people
The class begins with introductions, tea or coffee and a discussion of the materials and processes you'll use on the class.
First we will discuss your ideas and the images you might like to create and look at what sorts of things can be used for casting shapes into plaster.
Things that look really great are flowers, plants and foliage – these will be supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own flowers if you fancy.
You might also consider bringing textiles, natural or man-made materials, feathers, keys, lego pieces, anything you can take an impression from!
You will then get your hands dirty and make your first small tile, learning how to roll out the clay and make a dam around the edges.
We will then make impressions and mix our first batch of plaster, before pouring and leaving to set.
The plaster will take approx. 30mins to set depending on its depth and the ambient temperature – so it's time to work on your next tile.
After learning the basics you will have time to create up to two further tiles from your own ideas.
Once all the tiles are made and the plaster is setting we will discuss how to clean them.
This is best left for a few days until the plaster is fully set, but we will give you a demonstration during the afternoon so you will know what to do once back home.
You will take all your work home with you at the end of the day.
The course cost of £70 inc VAT per person includes:
All clay and plaster for up to 3 tiles
Use of tools, apron, goggles and protective gloves
Refreshments during the day
2 tutors, maximum class size 4 people
Your plaster tiles to take home (note they will need extra time to fully set)
