Chris Sims

Painting, drawing, sketchbooks

Chris Sims uses colour and instinctive mark making to evoke or capture a moment in time in the rural English landscape. His paintings are often considered to be reminiscent of the St Ives painter Peter Lanyon.

Although not directly relating to one particular scene or place, much of his work is rooted in the landscape, rural or urban around the chalky English countryside and the Cornish coastline.

The attraction to the physical nature of his view inspires compositions, utilising mark making and abstracted shapes, evoking and capturing an emotive place. By applying a dynamic, energetic and intuitive approach, using inks, paints, charcoal and other mediums a point is reached where he is satisfied that a balanced composition has emerged.

Graduating from Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1985, Chris has worked as a graphic designer for over 25 years but has now been painting professionally for the last 15 years and has a growing collector’s market worldwide.
