Nick Marchant

Biography:

Nick’s contact with the art world began when he left school and worked at the Robert
Sielle Studios where he learnt to frame artworks for the Tate and National Gallery as well
as for a number of well known artists.

He went on to study at Oxford School of Art and Leicester College of Art and Design and
the Royal College of Art, London
.
For the next 12 years he worked as Head of Design at the internationally acclaimed
Kilkenny Design Workshops in Ireland where he planned and established design services
for industry including Precious Metals and Jewellery, Ceramics, Printed and Woven
Textiles, Furniture and Industrial Design, Graphic Communications and Design Strategy.

He then returned to London, joining a successful high technology design consultancy and
in 1996 established an independent practice in Amersham specialising in Product Design
and User Interface Design.

Nick has been the personal recipient of a number of design awards. He was the first
British designer to receive the Braun International Design Award and also received the
Philips Design Award and two EU Design Awards.

He has undertaken special design assignments in Norway, Nepal, Montserrat and
Ukraine.

He is a former director of the Crafts Council of Ireland, the Quality Control Association,
the National Standards Authority and of the Institute of Designers in Ireland.

As well as lecturing and teaching, he has 35 years continuous experience as an External
Examiner at UK universities and has authored several books and publications on design.

Nick works with mixed media combining assemblage, representational drawn images
and gestural abstract marks giving his paintings an unusual energy.
