Biography

Debby has been painting professionally since the late 70’s and, after a long and varied career, now specialises in miniature painting on Kelmscott vellum which has been produced since 1870 at the riverside works of W Cowley in Newport Pagnell where she was born.

The highly detailed colourful miniatures mostly measure just 2 inches square and generally feature British birds and animals together with intricate borders, quotes and sayings from literature or folklore, with Debby often returning to Shakespeare, Keats and John Clare for inspiration.

She is an elected member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, The Society of Women Artists and the Hilliard Society, and has won numerous awards for her work including the HRH Princess Michael of Kent Award for the The Most Outstanding Watercolour and the Caron Keating Memorial Award at the SWA annual exhibitions, was three times winner of the Alexander Gallery Masters  Award, several awards at the RMS, including the Presidents Special Commendation, and awards in international  miniature exhibitions in the USA whilst exhibiting with the Miniature Arts Society of Florida, and the Miniature painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, of which she was made a member.

She is also a member of the Association of Animal Artists in the UK and has won several awards at their exhibitions, including Best in Show and the Pollyanna Pickering Award.

Debby is represented in the USA by the Sea Side Gallery, Nags Head, North Carolina where she has won the best Opaque/Watercolour Award for miniature paintings in 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Debby has also written a book, ‘Jessica Fluffy Gurmington Swine’, which she wrote for her grandchildren during lockdown. Originally intended just for them alone, her husband persuaded her to add some black and white illustrations and get it published. It tells the story of Jessica who, on the eve of her tenth birthday, learns she may fall foul of the Gurmington Swine family curse. When the fateful day passes with no apparent ill results, she sets off with her friend, Hugo, to find her aunt, Louella Lulabelle, who she helps can tell her whether the curse is real or just a fanciful tale. The family are called ‘Swine’ for a reason … The book has received some lovely revues and is a treat for children and adults alike.

She has also collaborated with a lifelong friend, Paul Brice, on ‘The Duchess In the Cupboard’, a very witty and engaging poem by Paul which Debby has brought to life with every page handwritten and illustrated . The book has been very well received with revues including, ‘It flowed brilliantly – each picture captures the verse wonderfully,’ ‘The text is impressive – delightful, sassy and heart warming,’ ‘Irrepressibly joyous, and delightfully quirky drawings of unforgettable characters.’

Both books are available from Debby’s website.

When not painting, Debby enjoys rummaging around collectors fairs on the lookout for items from the 1970’s Biba store to add to her extensive collection, reading murder mysteries, walking in the countryside, horse riding and exploring old churches.
