With saw in one hand and the other gripping a silver sheet, you could see the whites of my knuckles. Through great concentration and precision, I meticulously carved my first ever intricate, French rose pendant. So ok, maybe there were a few broken blades along the way, but I was ecstatic with my ornate handiwork. This was my introduction to silversmithing at the Queens Park Art Centre, Aylesbury in January 2019. Having recently taken voluntary redundancy from the corporate world, I had finally found my true vocation. It had only taken me half a century to discover it.
Four years on, having mastered my craft, I have my own successful jewellery business: Gems and Jules. My inspiration is taken predominately from architecture, historical artifacts and the beautiful world around us. Using recycled silver and gold, precious and semi-precious gems I craft highly imaginative, elegant and unique pieces, including rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces to name but a few.
As a member of the London Goldsmith Assay company, I have my own unique stamp to mark my work.
In the past I have been interviewed on Tring radio and had my own quirky advertising jingle. My commissioned pieces have been worn by a channel 5 News journalist and a BBC documentary presenter. To date three local shops in Tring, my home town, hold my creations; some of which adorn the hand-made display suits of the local tailor. As you can see, I’ve been busy spreading the word of my jewellery to brighten as many lives as I can. Up until Christmas 2023 I have over 60 craft events book around Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
Having been inspired by my work, The Chiltern Open Air Museum in Chalfont St. Peter commissioned me to design themed pieces based for their special events throughout 2022. I’m excited to be creating more exciting themed pieces for 2023.
Jewellery isn’t all about creating, but also giving back to the community. I give inspirational talks and demonstrations for various organisations including the Women’s Institute, and hold one-to-one workshops for those who have a jewellery dream they wish to transform into reality and Unleash their Inner Sparkle!
My working practices have been adapted to help those struggling with the use of their hands, I offer magnetic and easy close clasps for the disabled. Additionally, I’m proud to be designing bespoke pieces to meet the individual tastes of those in the LGBTQ community, as I believe jewellery is for everyone to enjoy.
Four glorious years on and the exciting journey continues. I feel so privileged that Gems and Jules Jewellery has been a part of so many happy occasions.
